The Student Mentoring Program was established by the Peoria Medical Alumni Council in 1997. Since the program's inception, various changes have been made. Currently, programs are offered in a relaxed setting with a topic presented by a panel of mentors. In this forum, alumni-mentors are provided with the opportunity to share their professional experiences and personal insights with the student group.

During each school year, the Council attempts to provide three programs. The topics of these three programs are: Physician Lifestyles, More Physician Lifestyles, and Research as Part of Your Medical Career. In each program, students are able to gain perspectives on their lives in their future careers.

PHYSICIAN LIFESTYLES

The topic of physician lifestyles has been one of the most requested by our students.  The students are very interested in learning about realistic lifestyle comparisons between the various specialties.  Therefore, the Alumni Council sponsors two programs each year devoted to providing information on as many different specialties as possible.  During the programs, the panelists are asked to share information about their daily routines in the office, as well as at home.

The first student mentoring program of the academic year was held at the College on February 13, 2006. Several area physicians served as panelists for the evening's program on Physician Lifestyles. Specialties represented were Obstetrics/Gynecology (Dr. John Mueller), Family Practice (Dr. Joan Golemon), Internal Medicine (Dr. Sara Rusch), and Med/Peds (Dr. Jeff Hoschek).
