Welcome to the Department of Pediatrics at University of Illinois College of Medicine at Peoria (UICOMP).  The mission of the Department is to provide excellent patient care to children in central and southern Illinois as well as provide medical education to UICOMP students and residents.  We perform our mission in the context of collaboration with Children’s Hospital of Illinois , Easter Seals-UCP and multiple other partners within the community.  The Department has 138 faculty members providing general pediatric services and pediatric subspecialty coverage in most pediatric subspecialties to children in Central Illinois .

            Our clinical services provided in collaboration with Children’s Hospital of Illinois include allergy/pulmonary, cardiology, child abuse, critical care, cystic fibrosis, developmental pediatrics, emergency medicine, endocrinology, gastroenterology, genetics, hematology oncology, infectious diseases, neonatology, neurology, pulmonary medicine including a home-ventilator program, child psychiatry and general pediatrics.  You can find detailed information at the Children’s Hospital of Illinois website http://www.childrenshospitalofil.org/default.htm

            Our clinical services include a Cystic Fibrosis Center.  The Children’s Hospital Cystic Fibrosis Center is one of 115 accredited centers in the USA .  The multispecialty health care team cares for about 100 pediatric and adult people with cystic fibrosis from 27 surrounding counties.  We participate in the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s national registry and quality improvement program and our patient’s results are better than the national median for growth and lung function.  If you would like more information or an appointment, please call Marie at 309-624-9632 or Sarah at 309-624-9627.

Our Hemoglobinopathy/Sickle Cell Program serves patients from birth to 18 years of age.  The Program is jointly sponsored by the Department of Pediatrics of UICOM-P and Children's Hospital of Illinois , and housed at the St. Jude Midwest Affiliate clinic on the first floor of Children’s Hospital of Illinois .  Our team of board-certified pediatric hematologist/oncologists, sickle cell nurses, counselor, and child life specialist work together with other subspecialists to meet the often complex needs of these unique patients and their families.  We see patients throughout Central Illinois , many of whom attend our IDPH-sponsored Outreach Clinics, held at several sites within the region.  The contact number for the program is (309) 624-4945.

The James Maloof St Jude Midwest Affiliate is a collaborative effort between UICOMP, Children’s Hospital of Illinois and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital .  Within the Affiliate, the Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology provides comprehensive care to children, adolescents and young adults with hematological disorders or cancer. Outpatient care is provided in the modern James Maloof St. Jude Affiliate Clinic. The clinic partners with the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis and together they collaborate to provide comprehensive protocol-structured treatments for the pediatric hematology-oncology patients. The clinic has a highly trained and dedicated nursing staff and four Pediatric Hematologists/Oncologists. 

The Comprehensive Bleeding Disorders Center (CBDC) is the only center in Illinois outside of Chicago providing and supporting comprehensive services to persons with bleeding disorders.  CBDC has assembled a team of professionals; people who know and continue to learn about the different aspects of hemophilia. This team is committed to promoting the health of affected individuals along with the education of both affected individuals and the public about congenital bleeding disorders. CBDC believes health promotion includes facilitating the provision of comprehensive, state-of-the-art treatment for individuals with hemophilia and related disorders and complications thereof, in the most cost-effective manner possible, and promoting quality of life for those affected through support, education and clinical research.             The Pediatric Resource Center (PRC) is a community service program that combines medical and social services in evaluating and treating children who are suspected of being physically abused, sexually abused and neglected. Referrals come from the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services, physicians, police officers, parents, and others.   The staff serves over 350 children per year from 40 counties in Central Illinois .  The Medical Director is Dr. Kay Saving and the Administrative Director is Linda Simkins, L.C.S.W.  For more information please visit the PRC webpage at http://www2.uicomp.uic.edu/Dept/PRC/default.html

The Pediatric Diabetes Resource Center serves over 700 children and teenagers with Types 1 and 2 diabetes mellitus.  This program is jointly sponsored by the Department of Pediatrics at UICOMP and The Children's Hospital of Illinois and is located in the Easter Seals Center.  The staff includes pediatric endocrinologists, CDE nurse educators and dietitians, and a social worker.  Individual and group education sessions are offered, and on-going diabetes care is available in the Pediatric Diabetes Clinic.  For more information, please call 1-309-682-8035 or 1-888-436-2278.

Outpatient clinics are located in several facilities within the hospital complex.  Child Development and Diabetes clinics are held in collaboration with Easter Seals in their building.  Primary Care, Endocrinology, Infectious Disease, Cystic Fibrosis and Adolescent Medicine are located in the Allied Agencies Building.  Gastroenterology, Neurology, Psychiatry, Genetics, and Home Vent programs are located in the Hillcrest Building .  The St. Jude Clinic and the hemoglobinopathy clinic are located within the hospital. 

We are looking forward to a brighter future with the building of the new Children’s Hospital scheduled to open the summer of 2010.  This important project will provide a designated Pediatric Emergency Area, consolidate surgical services, consolidate children’s health services and enlarge our pediatric intensive care and neonatal intensive care units.
