Call Schedule
Your call schedule will be very reasonable.
The call system is structured to provide a team environment and
to make sure there is always adequate support for the residents
on call.
1st year
When you are on call for the Family Medical Service (FMS), seven
of the twelve months, call is approximately every fifth night.
Responsibilities include covering floor calls and admissions for
the service. There is a second-year resident in the hospital who
works with you on all admissions, and who is available for any
other questions or concerns. In addition, there is a third-year
resident on call at home, who will come in for difficult
patients, such as ICU admissions, or if you are getting too
busy. The average is about 3 admissions per night.
Call during your St. Francis Medical Center rotations
(Pediatrics, Medical ICU, and Neonatal ICU) is typically every
fourth night. Again, there is always a senior-level resident in
the hospital for the service to provide backup and supervision.
Call during your two month of Obstetrics (at Methodist Medical
Center) is every third or fourth night. Your OB chief is
available at home for any questions, and the second-year
resident in the hospital covering the Family Medicine Service is
there to help with any emergencies. You are responsible for
deliveries, Cesarean Sections and evaluation of outpatients for
the OB's and FP attendings that we work with.
2nd year
Call is typically about once per week (4-5 times per month)
during nine months of the year. While on call, you are the
senior resident covering the Family Medicine Service.
Responsibilities include working with the intern on admissions,
pediatric admissions, providing other assistance as needed by
the intern, and code coverage. The third-year resident is
available from home if necessary. You are also in contact with
the attending physician on call, especially for any admissions.
Your other two months of call are every third or fourth night,
covering the Methodist OB Service. There is no call required
during your second-year rotation in Emergency Medicine.
3rd year
Call during your third year is from home, and is usually 3 to 4
times a month. You will help to staff all admissions over the
phone, gaining valuable experience in making decisions at home.
Occasionally you may need to go in to the hospital to help with
critical patients or if the residents in-house are too busy. The
third-year residents on the Family Medical Service cover the
weekends so their are very few weekend calls except when you are
on the Family Medical Service.
