Obstetrics and Gynecology Rotations
During your obstetrics rotations,
you work with several of the busiest obstetricians in Peoria in
addition to our own faculty's patients. You gain further
experience by caring for your own OB patients throughout your
residency. We also run two indigent OB clinics, one of which is
inner city and one rural, that provide around
200
additional deliveries per year. The chief goals of your
obstetrics rotations are to learn the management of normal labor
and delivery, as well as the early diagnosis and treatment of
complications. You also serve one month in the third year of
residency as OB Service Chief, helping with teaching and
organizing the management of the service.
You learn outpatient gynecology during your
second year of residency. We work in the private offices of
four gynecologists, one of whom specializes in gynecologic
oncology. There are many outpatient experiences, including an
STD clinic, a family planning clinic, and a colposcopy clinic,
all in indigent areas.
In addition to providing care for patients in
all prenatal stages and immediate and postpartum periods, you
will become proficient in:
- vaginal delivery
- fetal monitoring
- labor induction
- amniotomy
- vacuum extraction
- outlet forceps
- third and fourth degree laceration repair
- obstetrical complication recognition and
treatment
- Caesarean section assistance (Additional
training in Cesarean section performance is available upon
request.)
- dilatation and curettage
- gynecologic surgery first assistance
- newborn resuscitation
- high risk infant immediate post delivery
care
- colposcopy
- circumcision
- endometrial sampling
