| One of the
most important factors in choosing a residency is
the city you'll live in for the next three years.
So the obvious question is-What does Peoria have to
offer me? The answer may not be all that obvious.
Firstly, Peoria offers a medical community which
rivals almost any major medical center in the
country. St. Francis Hospital (where you'll have
NICU and Pediatrics in your first year) is home to
the Children's Hospital of Illinois-the most capable
Children's hospital between Chicago and Saint
Louis. Our NICU handles babies with gestational
ages as low as 23-24 wks, and there is appropriate
volume. We also have one of the busiest pediatric
cardiac surgery wards in the state. MMCI boast a
very busy L&D floor with modern remodeled rooms. We
also have full open-heart capability, as well as the
first PET scanner in the area. You will not miss
out on any medical opportunity in Peoria,
unfortunately I can't tell you about them all.
What about living here? Peoria
has extremely affordable housing, as do the
surrounding areas. Most of our residents own their
own homes, and rental properties are extremely
nice. You will rarely find yourself traveling more
than fifteen minutes to reach any point. We have a
good shopping mall (I won't lie and say it's great),
and a new mall is in the works. We also have a
stable economic base with Caterpillar Tractor
Company, ADM, and Diamond Star Motors nearby. The
public school system here is very nice, and there
are an abundance of private and parochial schools.
We have two excellent community colleges and Bradley
University--a well known four year institution.
Finally-Will you be bored?
No! There are plenty of things to do in Peoria, as
you will see in the pages below, and if nothing
suits your fancy, Chicago, Saint Louis, and
Indianapolis are just a short drive away. We have
ECHL hockey, Arena League II football, and Class A
baseball (Cardinals affiliate). The Peoria Civic
center has the Peoria Civic Orchestra, Community
Theatre, and Opera. It also hosts many large-name
acts. Our riverfront is currently undergoing a
massive reconstruction. We also have the Illinois
Valley Striders and Illinois Valley Wheelmen--active
running and cycling clubs that do daily runs and
rides. The is abundant hiking at Jubilee Park,
Forest Park, and Detweiller Park, as well as Starved
Rock State Park 1.5 hrs away. |
