Surgical Rotations
During your surgery rotations you work
directly with the surgeons,
participating in inpatient care,
surgery, and outpatient clinics. You are the first assistant for
most surgeries, and are able to develop your surgical skills.
Important skills you learn during your rotations in general
surgery and surgical subspecialties include:
- major surgical procedure first assistance
- minor surgical procedure performance
- pre and post operative management
- central venous line insertion
- trauma care
- chest tube insertion
- endotracheal intubation
We have recently started a "lump and bump"
clinic twice a month in the Residency clinic, with local
surgeons staffing the clinic. In this clinic, you perform
the procedure and the surgeon is available to give advice
and feedback. They also allow time for you to consult with
the surgeon regarding possible inpatient procedures.
