Basic Guidelines

Publishing copyrighted materials should only be used after obtaining written permission from the original source. Although not meant as an exhaustive list, these materials included the following:

• copies or articles, charts, graphs, or pictures taken from a copyrighted source

• musical works, including words

• motion pictures or other audiovisual materials

• sound recordings

• architectural works

• works that the local author has signed over copyright to a publisher (the publisher becomes the source)

When possible, use links to the source's web site rather than reproducing a document.

Obtain written permission from any patient prior to using that patient's picture, x-ray, or lab result.

Obtain written permission from any student prior to using that student's picture.
