Resident's Comments

I chose the Medicine-Pediatrics
program in Peoria for several reasons. After interviewing
throughout the Midwest, I found our program to have exceptional
balance between the categorical programs, education and patient
care, and work and play. I was impressed with the volume and
variety of patients encountered, and the availability of
top-notch specialty services. The strength and number of local
primary care providers and specialists who are Med-Peds trained
is remarkable. They are a valuable resource for residents both
during residency and beyond. Because of that influence, and
along with its longevity, our program has its own identity while
maintaining good relationships with our parent programs. The
biggest attractions, however, are the people involved with the
program and the Peoria area itself. Not only do we have an
excellent working relationship amongst the residents, we also
get together outside the hospital for recreational sports
leagues, a variety of organized outings, and small events on a
whim. The city of Peoria is an ideal place to live as a
resident. The cost of living is very reasonable given the
compensation, and we are able to afford nice houses in safe
neighborhoods, where many raise families. At the same time, we
are able to participate in the all of the arts, sports, dining,
recreation, and entertainment that Central Illinois has to
offer. Thanks for looking at our program, and please don't
hesitate to contact us with any questions you might have.

If you are at all interested in Med-Peds,
the program here in Peoria definitely deserves a close look. Our
program is extremely well supported by the hospital and is
integrated seamlessly into the departments of medicine and
pediatrics. The program staff is fantastic and does a great job
helping us through all the hassles of residency. OSF Saint
Francis Medical Center and the Children's Hospital of Illinois
have a huge referral base which gives us exposure to a wide
variety of pathology. In addition, the close working
relationship we enjoy with the attending faculty and
sub-specialists gives us ample opportunities for learning.
Besides the great educational and service components of our
program, there are other aspects that are just as important and
I believe we excel in all of them. Other residents should not
just be your coworkers, but should also be your friends and we
certainly have that type of atmosphere here. The Peoria area is
a great place to live and have a family. There are ample
recreational opportunities, good schools, and a very affordable
cost of living. All in all, our program is second-to-none, and I
hope you come to visit to experience it for yourself.

Before I came here for residency, I heard through another Med/Peds
program director that "the Med/Peds residents at Saint Francis
are the stars." And now that I work here, I see what was meant
by this comment. The people in our program are quality - in
skill and knowledge, in character, in commitment to excellence
in patient care. Our program has existed for 25 years and that
gives a stability and recognition that provides a very positive
environment in which to grow as a Med/Peds physician. This was
one of the most attractive elements about the program to me. I
appreciate having attendings that are Med/Peds trained, a large
group of fellow residents, and the recognition from hospital
staff and other residents who know that Med/Peds has been a
strong program here for many years. We mesh well with both the
Medicine and Pediatrics categorical residents and are an equal
presence in both departments.
