PATRICK W. ELWOOD, M.D.
Dr. Patrick Elwood is a true
Peorian, born and raised here, attending our public
schools – and returning to serve our community with his
neurosurgical skills. He attended the University of Illinois
College of Medicine in Chicago, from 1952 to 1956, receiving a
Bachelor’s degree from Bradley University with the Class of 1953
with transferred credits from the College of Medicine. He
received his Bachelor’s degree in 1954 and the M.D. with high
honors was awarded in 1956.
Dr. Elwood entered the practice of neurosurgery in 1961 and has
cared for patients at all three Peoria hospitals since that
time.
One of the most significant contributions made by Dr. Elwood is
his participation in the formation of the downstate educational
programs of the University of Illinois College of Medicine in
the late sixties. He spent several years extensively involved in
the undergraduate medical program, and was subsequently
appointed the first permanent department head at the University
of Illinois College of Medicine at Peoria. The department
initially was a department of neuroscience, which involved adult
and pediatric neurology and neurosurgery. A residency in
neurology was formed in 1978 and in neurological surgery in
1980. The Illinois Neurological Institute was formed in 1992 as
the clinical and research base for the residency programs in
neurology and neurological surgery, and neurology and
neurosurgery became independent departments ending a twenty-year
attempt at a single department. The Neurosurgery Department now
has six full-time faculty with subspecialization in pediatric,
spine, cerebrovascular, functional and pain, and tumor
neurosurgery.
Dr. Elwood’s primary clinical interest has been in the acute
management of aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations, dural
arteriovenous fistula, and acute ischemia of the brain. He began
a program of early surgery in aneurysms with microscope
dissection in 1968. He has developed with the Department of
Neurology a 23-hospital stroke network in downstate Illinois,
serving about 1.25 million people. The network utilizes
teleradiology and is developing treatment and research
protocols.
Dr. Elwood and his wife Gladys enjoy flower gardening together
in the Bradley-area home they have shared for 40 years. Two of
his children are attorneys and his son, Dr. Eric Elwood, is a
plastic surgeon practicing in Peoria.
