Surgical Oncology
Dr. Estes is Professor and Chair of the Department of
Surgery. He is Program Director of the
General Surgery Residency Program.
Dr. Estes received his medical degree from the University of
Kansas in1971, served his internship
in straight medicine and received his residency training in
General Surgery at the University of
Kansas Medical Center. Dr. Estes was Assistant Professor of
Surgery at the University of
Kentucky from 1976 to 1978 and while in private practice,
served as part-time Attending Surgeon
at the University of Missouri-Kansas City from 1978 to 1981.
From 1981 to
1984 he was Associate Professor of Surgery at Indiana
University. He returned to the University
of Kansas in 1984.
There, he became Professor of Surgery in 1993 and served as
Chief of Staff at the University of
Kansas Medical Center from 1992 until his present
appointment.
He is certified by the American Board of Surgery and has
attended the Program for Chiefs of
Clinical Services and the Advanced Program for Chiefs of
Clinical Services at the Harvard School
of Public Health in Boston, Massachusetts.
Dr. Estes has published numerous articles on Surgical
Oncology. His research interests have
focused on tumor proliferation and nutrition as well as
clinical studies in breast and
gastrointestinal malignancies.
Dr. Estes is a member of numerous oncology and surgical
societies and serves or has served as an
officer in many.
A native of Missouri, Dr. Estes and his wife Jan reside in
Peoria and are the parents of one
daughter and two sons.
