What is Mini-Medical School?

Mini-Medical Schools are community education programs now offered by more than 84 medical schools, universities, research institutions, and hospitals in at least 35 states across the nation.  (Plus two in Canada, and one each in Ireland, and Malta!)

Peoria's Mini-Medical School is intended to educate the public about the benefits of scientific research and clinical medicine being conducted at the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Peoria and around the nation.  The program is a lecture series that meets once a week at the Peoria campus and provides information on some of the same subjects studied by real medical students. You need not have a science background to attend.

Peoria’s Mini-Medical School was first offered to the general public in the spring of 1995.  Mini-Medical School provides individuals the opportunity to learn about many of the same topics that real medical students study.  In fact, the same faculty members that teach the full-time medical students also teach classes to the Mini-Med students.  The lecture series offers topics in the biomedical sciences that are typically covered during the first two years of medical school.  Students experience the “feel” of attending a real medical school without the stress, homework, exams, and tuition bills.  The program is open to anyone (regardless of age, educational background, etc.) interested in science, medicine, health, and the body.  Those attending will gain a better appreciation of the exciting research being done at the College (and around the nation) and the excellent clinical medicine being taught and practiced at the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Peoria and in the Peoria medical community.  Since its inception, the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Peoria Mini-Medical School has averaged approximately 100 participants each year.

Peoria’s program was the first Mini-Medical School to be offered in the state of Illinois, and the seventh program offered in the nation.  Mini-Medical School is offered once each year during the spring semester, normally running from late February through April.  The two-hour sessions are held one evening each week.

The program normally reaches capacity each year, so it is best to request and return the registration form as early as possible.  Prospective students can request to add their name and address to a mailing list for the program.  Brochures (including the registration form) for Mini-Medical School are developed each year and are available in January.

For any additional questions or to be added to the mailing list, please call (309) 671-8532 or email: rick@uic.edu.
