Research and Education

Medical research opportunities for residents in general surgery are extremely favorable at the University at Illinois College of Medicine at Peoria. The residents are required to initiate and complete at least one project in basic and/or clinical research. Help in selection, design, and implementation of these projects is available from the faculty and members of the departmental research committee. The department has several faculty members on the editorial boards of prominent surgery journals who also support resident research projects.  Residents are encouraged to prepare the results of their projects for presentation at regional or national surgery conferences as well as for articles submitted for publication in refereed journals.

Recent research projects from our current residents include:

  • Traumatic Vascular Injury Case Report
  • Axillary Venous Aneurysm
  • Surgically Placed Long-Term Central Venous Catheters in Neonates
  • Robotic Assisted Colon Resections
  • Laparoscopic Appendectomy in Children: After the Learning Curve
  • Laparoscopic Pyloromyotomy
  • Ethics in Surgical Education, $10,000 Central Surgical Association Grant
  • Ethics in Surgical Education, $6,212 UICOMP GME Resident Research Grant
